Errors in the preparation of the substrate

Errors in the substrate preparation are most often manifested by poor priming or poor preparation of the surface in terms of flatness and uniformity of the support.

The support is always desirable to be uniform, aligned, solid, cohesive, dried, profiled and well primed.

Errors in the application of the coating

Poor coating consistency

Poor consistency is probably one of the most common mistakes. A person who uses a Microbond coating tends to create a too thick material mixture. It is good to always stick to the mixing ratio indicated in the technical datasheet. The ideal consistency should be in layman's terms, such as the consistency of hot pudding or thinner honey.

Processing of internal and external edges

Primarily those who do not have a lot of experience with the application of coatings often face problems with processing the outer and inner edges. We recommend processing the outer and inner edges so that the individual walls are drawn gradually. This means that the coating is spread on one wall at a time, which is then left to dry, and then the coating is applied to the adjacent wall. This gradual application allows the inner edges to “lean” against an already laid layer. In the case of the outer edges, it is better to clean the coating from the excess layer and cut it. Edge sanding is also essential, and it is necessary to sand carefully and sand only surfaces, not edges. Edge sanding at an angle of 45° is usually carried out manually in the final cleaning.

Connection points

One of the most common errors in the implementation is the additional connection of the coating. Before the application itself, it is necessary to plan what surfaces we want to spread the coating on and how much material we will need for it with adequate reserve. The coating must always be spread so that it begins and ends with a natural barrier in the form of an inner or outer corner of the wall, a floor joint, etc.! Therefore, if it is not necessary, never end the coating somewhere in the middle of the wall, etc... The subsequent connection will always be visible! If necessary, try to end the layer in a place that is not in the central viewing axis and stretch it as unevenly as possible in different directions (a straight horizontal connection would be even more noticeable).

Impregnation errors

Uneven application

Impregnation must be carried out evenly. Leaks may occur in the event of uneven application. If the coating shows signs of insufficient impregnation, the impregnation should be supplemented either locally or with an additional layer throughout.

Bad application tools

When applying sealers, it is good to use high-quality tools. The application of the first layer of sealer is crucial when the impregnated surface is still completely absorbent. If an unsuitable tool is used, streaks or smudges may form on the surface that cannot be removed in subsequent layers. Generally, with thinner sealers (Cerbero Base, Gi.Gi. Sealer) it is recommended to use a microfiber applicator Snappy or Smoother, or pad holder on the floor. It is recommended to use a microfiber roller with a hair length of at least 8 mm for a thicker Cerbero Sealer impregnation.

Poor mixing of two-component sealers

Two-component sealers should be mixed well in the correct ratio and dilution as reported in the technical datasheets. At the same time, it is good to keep the two-component sealer at a temperature of about 20˚ C before mixing. In the case of exposure to higher temperatures, it is possible that their workability will be shortened and complicated.
